Tell the Forest Service not to log and burn forests that stabilize the climate. We need bold steps to address the climate emergency and stop extinction, not clearcut logging masquerading as fire prevention. Protect the wild places and the rare wildlife th

The rugged forests adjacent to the Pecos Wilderness are targeted by the deceptively titled Santa Fe Mountains Landscape Resiliency project. Denuded tracts will appear as more than 90 percent of the trees are felled and burned across nearly 60 square miles. This futile attempt to control wildfires will eliminate the very trees that remove and store atmospheric carbon. Over time the planned logging and burning will release more carbon into the atmosphere than wildfires.
High-quality wildlands will be cut over making them unsuitable for future protection. Rare wildlife that rely on mature forests will be imperiled. Human-caused fires will increase as little used roads are upgraded. The biological stronghold of nearly 70 species of imperiled songbirds will be lost.
Logging wild remote forests will likely make fires burn more intensely and spread faster. Fire safety requires regular removal of flammable vegetation close to homes, not logging the backcountry.
We need bold steps to address the climate emergency and stop extinction. Tell the Forest Service to keep the trees standing for people, wildlife and a livable future.

Illegal Logging in La Cueva Area

This is an example of illegal logging on private land. Poachers cut this 24 inch diameter tree on private land adjacent to the Santa Fe National Forest in La Cueva during the Forest Service thinning operation. Such illegal logging is nearly impossible to prevent during forest thinning.

Take Action

Sign the Petition to Save the Santa Fe Forests

Help us halt all tree clearing projects in the Greater Santa Fe Fireshed until an Environmental Impact Study is been completed.

The EIS must evaluate alternatives that protect roadless areas, wildlife populations, soil, water, and the ecological integrity of the forest using the best available science.
